Germany survived a massive scare to salvage a 2-2 draw with Hungary at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night, booking a last 16 spot against England and sending their opponents out of Euro 2020 in the process.

The Hungarians took a shock lead through Adam Szalai as the big Mainz frontman connected with strike partner Roland Sallai's cross to power in a header, sending shockwaves throughout Group F.

Joachim Low's side were sluggish for most of the encounter but Kai Havertz levelled the scores with a header after Mats Hummels beat Peter Gulacsi to a cross. That effort was wiped out emphatically as Hungary raced up the other end to regain their lead straight from kick off, Andras Schafer putting his body on the line to head past the onrushing Manuel Neuer.

However, substitute Leon Goretzka produced the goods when Germany needed him, hitting in a deflected equaliser to put his side second in Group F and book a spot in the last 16.

The two games in Group F on Wednesday night were seesaw affairs, with the Portugal-France game also ending 2-2, meaning France top the group and will face Switzerland. Portugal will tussle with Belgium.

Got all of that? Right, let's get into the Germany and Hungary player ratings.

GERMANY PLAYER RATINGS

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Manuel Neuer (GK) - 6/10 - Was caught in no man's land for Hungary's second. Made just two saves.

Matthias Ginter (CB) - 4/10 - Made a mistake in the build-up to the opener and was one of the many German defenders to be caught napping after their first equaliser which allowed Schafer to score.

Mats Hummels (CB) - 7/10 - Came so close to equalising but saw his header rebound off the upright. His header back across goal set up Havertz's effort. Still looks like he's running in quicksand and turns like a truck, but solid enough compared to his defensive colleagues.

Antonio Rudiger (CB) - 5/10 - Just like Ginter, his positioning for Hungary's second was woeful.

2. Wing backs & midfielders

Joshua Kimmich

Joshua Kimmich (RWB) - 8/10 - Tested Gulacsi early on with a fierce drive. Crossed well for Hummels who hit the woodwork. Whether he plays on the right or in central midfield, the Bayern Munich star is simply awesome and was Germany's best player on the night.

Ilkay Gundogan (CM) - 5/10 - Brought down Kleinheisler and was booked for it. Anonymous and brought off for Goretzka.

Toni Kroos (CM) - 7/10 - A very Kroos performance. Excellent on the ball and made four key passes. Very classy.

Robin Gosens (LWB) - 6/10 - Not the rampaging performance he produced against Portugal, though that will always be a difficult one to reproduce. Brought off late on.

3. Forwards

Kai Havertz (RF) - 7/10 - Sent a wicked ball across goal but nobody was there to convert. Got Germany back into the game with the equaliser and was their brightest attacker - very strangely brought off straight afterwards.

Leroy Sane (LF) - 5/10 - Neat and tidy but Germany needed more cutting edge and Sane couldn't provide it. Got a yellow card for handball. Couldn't catch Schafer while racing back before the Hungarians' second.

Serge Gnabry (ST) - 6/10 - Buzzed around and was happy taking players on, completing three of his five dribbles. Also brought off after the equaliser.

4. Substitutes

Leon Goretzka - 7/10 - Came up trumps when Die Mannschaft desperately needed him, slamming in a deflected effort.

Thomas Muller - 5/10

Timo Werner - 5/10

Jamal Musiala - 5/10

Kevin Volland - 5/10

HUNGARY PLAYER RATINGS

5. Goalkeeper & defenders

Peter Gulacsi

Peter Gulacsi (GK) - 4/10 - Culpable for Germany's equaliser, coming charging out of his goal and flapping at a cross. Was the busier of the two goalies and did well, the glaring error aside.

Endre Botka (CB) - 5/10 - Poor challenge on Gundogan earned Botka a yellow card.

Willi Orban (CB) - 7/10 - The most impressive of Hungary's centre backs. The RB Leipzig defender led at the back and made seven clearances, the most of any player.

Attila Szalai (CB) - 6/10 - Played his part as Hungary looked to soak up all the Germany pressure.

6. Wing back & midfielders

Loic Nego (RWB) - 5/10 - Started out on the right before moving infield. Not particularly influential or noticeable.

Laszlo Kleinheisler (CM) - 5/10 - The quieter of the three starting central midfielders. Brought off just before full time.

Adam Nagy (CM) - 7/10 - Anticipated play really well, making six interceptions. Helped Hungary transition into attack and used the ball efficiently.

Andras Schafer (CM) - 7/10 - Put his body on the line to hand Hungary the lead again in shocking fashion.

Attila Fiola (LWB) - 7/10 - Made six tackles, the most of any player on the night. Bombed up and down the left.

7. Forwards

Adam Nagy, Adam Szalai, Loic Nego

Roland Sallai (ST) - 7/10 - A magnificent ball from the right from Sallai set up strike. He's been involved in four goals in his last five games for Hungary. Also rattled the woodwork.

Adam Szalai (ST) - 8/10 - Who doesn't love a diving header? Szalai leapt brilliantly to connect with Sallai's perfect cross to hand Hungary a shock lead. Build-up play was impressive, especially for a big fella, getting the assist for his side's second.

8. Substitutes

Szabolcs Schön - 5/10

Kevin Varga - 5/10

Nemanja Nikolic - N/A

Gergo Lovrencsics - N/A
