Alexis Mac Allister chose to join Liverpool in the summer of 2023 due to how wanted he was made to feel by Jurgen Klopp, the midfielder's father has revealed.

Mac Allister was identified by Brighton & Hove Albion as far back as 2019, but remained on loan in Argentina for another year. He had a breakout season with the Seagulls in 2021/22, which fed into starring for Argentina at the 2022 World Cup and eventually moving to Liverpool in a deal worth £55m .

"When he was about to play [at the World Cup], we sat down with Brighton and negotiated a good release clause. So that he could deliver a good performance in the World Cup and go to a bigger team, which he did,” Carlos Mac Allister said an intervie with RG.

"We chose Liverpool because Klopp wanted him a lot, and they were going through a rebuild. Klopp fell in love with him and gave him a lot of opportunities, which he did not waste."

Mac Allister immediately became a key player for Liverpool, starting 31 Premier League games – it likely would have been more but for a knee injury that ruled him out during December.

The 26-year-old has remained important under Arne Slot as the Reds target trophies on multiple fronts this season. They have a healthy Premier League lead, are among the favourites in the Champions League, are going strong in the FA Cup and stand a strong chance of overturning a 1-0 aggregate deficit against a Tottenham Hotspur in turmoil in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

"He delivered a fantastic World Cup and a very good Copa America and has shown unique attributes," Mac Allister Sr. continued. "People mostly talk about Alexis' offensive abilities, but he also has the seventh-most recoveries in the Premier League. There are many footballers who attack well, many who defend well, but there aren’t many like Alexis who attack and defend well."

As Mac Allister's star has continued to rise, he has been linked with a Real Madrid transfer, even publicly expressing interest in playing in La Liga in the future. But it may not be something Liverpool need to worry about for a while yet, with Madrid's appetite for paying big transfer fees significantly suppressed these days and Mac Allister under contract at Anfield until 2028.
