Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has revealed that he would "like to play in Spain one day", opening the door to a potential La Liga transfer.

The Argentine midfielder came through at Argentinos Juniors in his home country, following the same path as his father and two brothers. Unlike the other Mac Allisters, Alexis moved to England, initially signing for Brighton in January 2019 before making his debut for the club 15 months later.

After starring on the south coast and winning the 2022 World Cup with Argentina, Liverpool snapped up Mac Allister for the modest sum of £35m. The versatile midfielder has won a pile of plaudits for his composed and accomplished performances across a variety of roles.

Following the departure of Liverpool's iconic manager Jurgen Klopp over the summer, there were rumours of a potential move to Real Madrid for the Argentine schemer. Mac Allister distanced himself from the speculation at the time, but has not ruled out the possibility of signing for a La Liga club in the future.

When quizzed by Spanish publication AS on the subject in a recent interview, Mac Allister admitted: "Yes, why not? It's a country I like a lot and I've visited it several times, and, above all, because of the language and the culture, it's very similar to Argentina. I would definitely like to play in Spain one day."

However, the 25-year-old insisted that his focus was very much on his current employers. "Right now," he concluded, "I'm very comfortable at Liverpool and I don't think about what might happen in the future."

Mac Allister has a deal with Liverpool stretching to the summer of 2028. Incoming manager Arne Slot has used the cerebral midfielder in all 21 matches this term, but will not be able to call upon his understated playmaker in the near future. After amassing five Premier League bookings and a trio of Champions League yellow cards, Mac Allister is ruled out of Liverpool's next two matches.

The storm-enforced postponement of the Merseyside derby this weekend only delayed Mac Allister's domestic suspension. Liverpool will now have to face an in-form Fulham side next Saturday without the Argentine.
