Andre Onana has bitten back at former Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic after he labelled the Cameroonian "one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United history".

United take on Matic's current employers, Lyon, in the quarter-finals of the Europa League on Thursday, with Onana seemingly taking the first shot at the Ligue 1 side after claiming United did not need to focus on how Lyon could hurt them because the Red Devils are "way better" than their opponents despite their struggles this season.

For context, United sit 13th in the Premier League, whereas Lyon are fifth in Ligue 1, just four points off second place.

Former United midfielder Matic, who offered a shocking review of the club's culture during his five-year spell at Old Trafford between 2017 and 2022, faced the media ahead of the game and was asked for his thoughts on Onana's comments.

"I respect everyone, but to say that, you need to get an answer," Matic began. "If you are one of the worst goalkeepers in Man Utd history, you need to take care what you are talking [about].

"If David de Gea or Peter Schmeichel or [Edwin] Van der Sar said that, then I will question myself, but if you are statistically one of the worst goalkeepers in Man Utd's modern history... you need to show before you say. We will see."

In response, Onana took to social media to insist he was not being disrespectful to Lyon, but ended with a barb of his own in Matic's direction.

"I would never be disrespectful to another club," he wrote. "We know that tomorrow will be a difficult game against a strong opponent. We focus on preparing a performance to make our fans proud.

"At least I've lifted trophies with the greatest club in the world. Some can't say the same."

Onana has come under increasing fire from both supporters and rival fans alike after a series of underwhelming performances, with several key mistakes plaguing his two years at United's starting goalkeeper.

There have recently been reports claiming United regret letting De Gea leave and replacing him with Onana, with the Red Devils now reported to be exploring a summer reunion with the Spaniard following his impressive resurgence with Fiorentina.

Fiorentina, for their part, are already taking steps to try and ensure they keep hold of De Gea beyond this season.
