Manchester United winger Antony has come under fire after cupping his ear to the Coventry City players after the Red Devils scraped through their FA Cup semi-final on penalties.

The £85m Brazilian came off the bench shortly after the hour mark of Saturday's tie with United 3-0 up at the time, only to watch the Championship outfit grab three late goals to take the game to extra time and, ultimately, penalties.

United came out on top from the spot kicks, which Antony celebrated by cupping his ear in the direction of the Coventry players.

United boss Erik ten Hag did his best to brush off the situation after the game but insisted United have no shortage of respect for their opponents.

"I haven't seen that so I can't comment on that but I know we have a big respect for Coventry City and what they did," Ten Hag said when quizzed about Antony's actions.

"But also we have to see our performance which was very good up until 70 minutes. There was a drop off but we showed determination and resilience to be in the final and that's a big achievement."

It is worth noting that Antony was not the first player to cup his ear during the shoot-out. Coventry striker Haji Wright was seen doing the same thing a few minutes earlier in the direction of the United fans after scoring his effort from 12 yards.

But few showed any sympathy for Antony, with former Coventry and Crystal Palace striker Clinton Morrison suggesting the Brazilian is closer to Coventry's level than he would like to think.

"He needs to concentrate on himself because he could be playing the Championship next season," Morrison said after the game.
