Liverpool manager Arne Slot has admitted his sadness at seeing compatriot Erik ten Hag get sacked by Manchester United.

Ten Hag was dismissed from his post on Monday after a dismal start to the campaign at Old Trafford, with the Red Devils 14th in the Premier League following Sunday's 2-1 loss to West Ham United and without a win three games into the Europa League campaign.

Slot battled the former Ajax boss four times in the Eredivisie but the duo only squared off once in the Premier League following the former's appointment at Liverpool. The Reds inflicted a damaging 3-0 defeat on United at Old Trafford at the start of September and Ten Hag failed to recover.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool's clash with Brighton & Hove Albion in the Carabao Cup, Slot said: "He's a Dutch manager which makes it even harder for me. Thoughts are with him. We are all in this job so we know it can happen.

"I know him a little bit and I know how much work he puts into it. For him, it's of course a pity. But we also know how well he did at Ajax and that he won two trophies over here. I think we'll see him at a big club again."

Liverpool beat United thanks to two strikes from Luis Diaz and another from Mohamed Salah, and Slot gave a comprehensive explanation of how he masterminded the victory over Ten Hag after the game.

United have moved quickly as they attempt to secure a successor to Ten Hag, entering into talks with Portuguese giants Sporting CP over Ruben Amorim.

While the 39-year-old was coy when asked about links with the Premier League giants, he has reportedly given his own go-ahead for the move to England.
