The excitement is permeating around the West Midlands as Aston Villa prepare for a historic 2024/25 campaign.

For the first time since the competition's rebranding in 1992, Villa are competing in the Champions League having held on for a fourth-place finish in the Premier League last season.

Unai Emery's impact at Villa Park has been utterly transformative, and Villa's experience in Europe last season should aid their ability to juggle what's set to be another demanding schedule next term. The club have been busy on the transfer front acquiring the likes of Ian Maatsen and Amadou Onana, with the addition of the latter filling the void left by Douglas Luiz, who has departed for Juventus.

The club's pre-season preparations are almost at a close, so here's how Villa have fared to date.

Where did Aston Villa go for 2024/25 pre-season?

Aston Villa are one of many Premier League clubs that journeyed to the United States this summer. However, the Villans did their tour a little differently to their domestic rivals.

Villa headed out later than the rest and began their tour against MLS opposition in the form of Columbus Crew on 28 July. After departing the state capital of Ohio, Villa travelled to the East Coast to face Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig on 1 August. Their tour concluded with a clash against Club America in Chicago several days later.

The Villans also visited the States last summer and were part of the Premier League Summer Series.

Villa's pre-season kicked off with a pair of convincing 3-0 wins. They first overcame EFL outfit Walsall away from home before toppling Slovakian side Spartak Trnava.

Emery's men then made the trip across the pond, where things were significantly more challenging. A humbling 4-1 defeat to MLS outfit Columbus Crew, in which former Watford man Cucho Hernandez bagged a hat-trick, left a lot to be desired in their US opener.

That defeat was followed up by another at the hands of Bundesliga side RB Leipzig. Goals from attacking duo Andre Silva and Lois Openda were the difference, with Diego Carlos achieving the rare feat of getting sent off in a friendly following two yellow cards in the 2-0 loss.

A pretty disastrous tour in terms of results was rounded off with a 1-0 defeat to Club America, who'd just been beaten 3-0 by Chelsea. Illian Hernandez broke the deadlock with 15 minutes remaining.

Villa have returned to Europe for a couple more friendlies, which started with a 3-2 win over Athletic Club in the Midlands. Cameron Archer's late strike earned Emery's men victory and they now face Borussia Dortmund in Germany on Saturday 10 August.
