Athletic Club are ready to try and tie winger Nico Williams down to a new contract as they prepare for another transfer battle in January, a report has revealed.
Williams, 22, emerged as one of Europe's most-wanted wingers even before his dazzling displays led Spain to glory at Euro 2024, with the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Barcelona and Aston Villa all chasing his signature before he committed his short-term future to Athletic.
However, with a release clause of €60m (£50.5m) still active in his contract, Williams remains a potential bargain in the transfer market and SPORT state Athletic are well aware that they have not yet won the fight to keep hold of their prized possession.
Athletic officials have made it clear to Williams that they want to extend his contract beyond 2027 and they hope to drastically increase his release clause in the process.
Barcelona expect to clear up the uncertainty surrounding their finances in 2025, when they believe they will rediscover their spending power, and Camp Nou officials are preparing to make a renewed effort to land Williams' signature.
Importantly, Barcelona have made it clear to Williams that a move to Catalonia will only be possible if he does not sign a new contract, warning the 22-year-old he must rebuff all approaches if he truly wants to join them.
They are not expected to be alone in their pursuit of Williams. Arsenal and Chelsea are long-term admirers, while La Liga rivals Real Madrid were recently credited with an interest in the Spain star.
