Barcelona confirm departure of defender on free transfer
- Marcos Alonso moving on after two seasons at Camp Nou
- Spaniard left Chelsea as a free transfer to join Barca
- Left-back heavily linked with move to Atletico Madrid
Barcelona have officially announced the departure of left-back Marcos Alonso, whose tenure at the club is coming to an end after the expiration of his contract.
Alonso arrived at Camp Nou as a free transfer from Chelsea in September 2022 and went on to play close to 50 matches, finding the back of the net three times.
The Spaniard, who had previously won the Premier League, four FA Cups, the Champions League and the Europa League with Chelsea, enhanced his trophy cabinet with a La Liga title in 2022/23 and the Spanish Super Cup in 2023.
"Marcos Alonso is not to continue with FC Barcelona, as the Spanish defender's contract ends on June 30," Barca's statement on the defender read.
"FC Barcelona would like to place on record their appreciation for his commitment and dedication, and wish him all the best and every success in the future.
"The left back leaves FC Barcelona after two seasons wearing blaugrana. He arrived from Chelsea in 2022 and played 45 games, scoring three goals."
Alonso's next career move remains uncertain, although there are rumours circulating that the 33-year-old may continue playing in La Liga, with Atletico Madrid regularly touted as potential suitors.
Sergi Roberto’s current contract with La Blaugrana also expires on June 30 but a new deal has reportedly been tabled.
The Spaniard has been a Barca player for over a decade and is said to be weighing up his options, though he does have a deadline for the club's new offer.
He has attracted interest from various outfits too, including Sevilla, Valencia, and Girona.
