Barcelona confirm new long-term contract for Pau Cubarsi

Barcelona have confirmed that teenage centre-back Pau Cubarsi has signed a new long-term contract with the club.

Cubarsi burst onto the scene last January at the age of just 17, quickly becoming a key first-team player despite his lack of experience.

The youngster was officially added to the senior squad ahead of the current campaign and has now pledged his future to Barcelona until the summer of 2029.

Cubarsi celebrated his 18th birthday just three weeks ago but has already racked up 60 Barcelona appearances and forms part of a strong La Masia core in the squad alongside Lamine Yamal, Gavi, Alejandro Blade, Fermin Lopez and Marc Casado.

The Spain international's place has been unaffected by vice-captain Ronald Arauo returning to fitness. He has partnered Inigo Martinez for much of the campaign and it is likely to be the veteran who loses out, although both Martinez and Araujo have suffered minor recent injuries.

Remarkably, Cubarsi hasn't even finished school yet, in the process of completing his final year.

"I train in the morning and go to class at three in the afternoon. The teachers from Lleo XIII (school) come to La Masia and I have class until eight in the evening," he revealed to RAC1 in November.

"If there's a Champions League, I have to ask for notes or be attentive the next day to catch up. Sometimes it's difficult to study, but I'd like to study a degree in marketing or business administration, but first I have to finish high school and then we'll see."
