Bayern Munich are heavy favourites to beat Slovan Bratislava on Wednesday night but require results to go their way in order to automatically qualify for the Champions League round of 16.

Vincent Kompany's side have underwhelmed in the Champions League so far this season, and a 3-0 defeat to Feyenoord last week greatly reduced their chances of finishing in the top eight of the league phase table.

A place in the knockout round play-offs is secure, and they'll have to play two games in February to progress into the last 16 if they fail to ascend into the top eight after Matchday 8.

The Bundesliga leaders are facing a Slovan Bratislava team that are yet to claim a point during their first experience of this competition. The Slovakian outfit have conceded the most goals in the league phase and simply haven't been able to compete against the continent's elite.

The visitors do sit atop the Slovakian Premier League with just a few games remaining on their domestic calendar.

Here's 90min's guide to Bayern Munich vs Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League.

Bayern Munich team news

Leon Goretzka picked up a minor muscle injury in Saturday's win over Freiburg, but the German midfielder is suspended for Wednesday's game anyway due to yellow card accumulation.

Bayern have lost Alphonso Davies for the next four to six weeks due to a hamstring injury sustained in last week's defeat to Feyenoord. Dayot Upamecano is also a doubt, while summer arrival Hiroki Ito continues to be bothered by a foot problem.

With Sven Ulreich suspended and Daniel Peretz sidelined, Manuel Neuer is the only senior goalkeeper available for the hosts.

It's been a slog for the visitors on their maiden Champions League bow, and they'll be aiming to end the league phase with a historic result on Wednesday night.

They'll be aided by a clean bill of health, although experienced midfielder Juraj Kucka misses out with a long-term knee injury.

Former Tottenham defender Kevin Wimmer could start at the heart of a back three, while Bayern will aim to contain Slovan's top scorer, David Strelec, up top.

Bayern Munich vs Slovan Bratislava score prediction

Bayern only have themselves to blame for not being in a rosier position in the league phase table. They squandered chance after chance in Rotterdam last week, and were undone by Feyenoord's work on the counter.

This should be a much more serene outing for Kompany's side - the sort of night they've gotten used to over the past 15 years.

There's still a chance they end up in the top eight, so the hosts will be keen to enjoy an emphatic victory against an outmatched Slovan Bratislava team.

Prediction: Bayern Munich 5-1 Slovan Bratislava
