Ben Chilwell's Chelsea future 'uncertain' under Enzo Maresca
- Ben Chilwell faces uncertain future at Chelsea
- Left-back has struggled with injuries
- New boss Enzo Maresca is hard at work
Ben Chilwell's future at Chelsea has been branded 'uncertain' having notably been plagued with injury throughout the 2023/24 season.
Chilwell amassed just 21 appearances last term, with only 13 in the Premier League league to mark the second time in his four seasons at Chelsea that he’s missed a significant chunk of matches.
Injury woes, competition for place and a fresh outlook from new manager Enzo Maresca are perhaps why the Daily Telegraph have deemed his future with the Blues up in the air.
Chilwell arrived at Stamford Bridge in 2020 from Leicester City in a £45m deal that hugely excited fans. However, in November the following year, the left-back ruptured a cruciate ligament during a Champions League win over Juventus and missed the rest of the season following surgery.
He later suffered two less serious hamstring issues during 2022/23, with more hamstring and then knee trouble the cause of his lengthy absences in 2023/24. During a run of fitness, Chilwell did captain Chelsea in February's Carabao Cup final defeat to Liverpool.
The 27-year-old is under contract at Stamford Bridge until the summer of 2027, but Maresca could have his own ideas. Despite Ian Maatsen being likely to join Aston Villa in a big money transfer, Marc Cucurella is flying with Spain at Euro 2024 and Levi Colwill gas often played on the left too.
Along with Chilwell, the futures of Conor Gallagher and Trevor Chalobah may be at Chelsea. The former, who is currently representing England at Euro 2024, is out of contract next year and has been heavily linked with Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa.
