Two clubs thriving in the Champions League this season meet on Wednesday night as Borussia Dortmund host Barcelona.

Continental duels between these two teams are rare and Dortmund are chasing their first competitive victory over Barca at Signal Iduna Park.

They've so far been plagued by inconsistency under new manager Nuri Sahin, with much of their best work this term arriving in Europe. Dortmund have benefitted from a kind schedule, but they've nonetheless produced impressive performances against Dinamo Zagreb, Celtic and Club Brugge.

The hosts are currently sixth in the Bundesliga after dropping more points at the weekend.

Barcelona also failed to win last time out, drawing 2-2 at Real Betis, and there are signs of fatigue creeping into Hansi Flick's squad after an excellent start to the season. Game-changers are in short supply off the bench, with Flick currently reliant on 11-12 individuals. They sit atop La Liga by virtue of Real Madrid playing a game fewer.

Here's all you need to know about Wednesday's Champions League clash.

Borussia Dortmund team news

Dortmund have problems in defence after Niklas Sule sustained an ankle injury during their draw at Gladbach. Sule joins summer arrival Waldemar Anton, who's dealing with a muscle issue, on the sidelines.

With these two out, Emre Can may be forced to start at centre-back.

Maximiliano Beier was another casualty from the weekend and is unlikely to feature against Barca, but both Karim Adeyemi and Julian Brandt could feature having recovered from their respective setbacks.

Barcelona team news

There's great news on the injury front for the visitors with Ronald Araujo included in the travelling squad to Dortmund following a lengthy layoff.

The Uruguay international surely won't come back into Flick's team right away, but his imminent return is a big boost for Barca.

There are no fresh concerns for Flick, who is still without Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Marc Bernal, Ansu Fati and Andreas Christensen. Despite drawing at Betis, there are unlikely to be many changes to the Barca XI for Wednesday's continental clash.

Borussia Dortmund vs Barcelona score prediction

Dortmund are as inconsistent as they come, but you don't want to face them under the lights at Signal Iduna Park. How many members of Europe's aristocracy have succumbed in this environment?

The hosts are well-equipped for penetrating a Barcelona defensive line that looks more fragile by the game. Flick's side are beginning to struggle without the ball and their inability to suffocate teams is exposing their backline.

However, Dortmund's injury issues in defence mean the visitors will have joy going forward and it could be a shootout on Wednesday. Given the issues Barca have manifested away from home this season, a thrilling home win could be on the cards.

Prediction: Borussia Dortmund 3-2 Barcelona
