Liverpool were the big winners on Champions League matchday five, beating a patched up Real Madrid at Anfield on Wednesday night to maintain their 100% start to the competition.
The Reds secured the "revenge" for defeats in the 2018 and 2022 finals that Andrew Robertson was targeting pre-game, with goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo either side of missed penalties from Kylian Mbappe and Mohamed Salah provign decisive.
24 hours earlier, Arsenal made a statement of their own by demolishing a newly Ruben Amorim-less Sporting CP in Lisbon, scoring five in the process. Manchester City had another miserable night, throwing away a 3-0 lead against Feyenoord to make it six games without a win in all competitions.
Also on Tuesday, Barcelona were 3-0 winners over French minnows Brest, who accidentally leaked their lineup and strategy the day before the game.
Meanwhile, Atalanta put six goals past Young Boys, as did Atletico Madrid against Sparta Prague. There were also five goals for Bayer Leverkusen against Red Bull Salzburg. AC Milan edged a five-goal thriller in Slovakia against Slovan Bratislava.
An own goal secured Inter a narrow 1-0 home win over RB Leipzig in Milan, with Bayern Munich emerging victorious over Paris Saint-Germain by the same 1-0 scoreline that decided their meeting in the behind closed doors 2020 final.
Into Wednesday's early kick-offs, Red Star Belgrade were red hot, putting five goals past Stuttgart to claim their first victory – and their first points – of the competition. In Austria, Sturm Graz also got off the mark by winning 1-0 against Girona and leapfrogging the Spanish side in the process.
There was nothing to separate Aston Villa and Juventus, although the Premier League did have a would-be last gasp winner ruled out for a soft foul.
Benfica came from behind with two late goals against Monaco to secure a 3-2 victory, with Borussia Dortmund scoring three without reply at Dinamo Zagreb. Remarkably, PSV Eindhoven scored three times in the last few minutes against Shakhtar Donetsk to turn a 2-0 defeat into a 3-2 win.
There was a narrow win for Lille against Bologna in Italy, while Celtic took a point from their encounter with Club Brugge after initially going behind via an own goal.
