Chelsea are set to sign England right-back Lucy Bronze on a free transfer following her departure from Women's Champions League holders Barcelona.

The 32-year-old's departure from the Catalans after two seasons was confirmed last week, fuelling speculation about her next career move.

With interest from clubs in the NWSL and Paris Saint-Germain, Bronze had a number of options to choose from. But sources have confirmed to 90min that a return to the Women's Super League is on the horizon for the Euro 2022 winner, with Chelsea set to sign Bronze to a two-year contract with the option of another 12 months.

Bronze played 70 times for Barcelona in two seasons, scoring five times, and played an instrumental role in their ongoing domestic and European dominance. A first-season quadruple was followed by a treble last year – victory over Lyon in the Women's Champions League seeing the club retain their continental crown for the first time.

She had previously spent five seasons at Manchester City, spread across two separate spells, after spending the formative years of her career at Sunderland, Everton and Liverpool.

Bronze's proposed arrival at Chelsea coincides with the dawning of a new era in west London. Chelsea are gearing up for their first season under new manager Sonia Bompastor, who has taken over the reins from Emma Hayes following her appointment as the United States Women's National Team boss.

Hayes spent 12 years in charge of Chelsea, winning seven Women's Super League titles – including the last five in a row - and lifted 16 trophies overall.

The Blues have already confirmed the arrival of 20-year-old Julia Bartel, who has signed a three-year contract with the option to extend by a further 12 months, and they've been strongly linked with moves for French duo Sandy Baltimore and Oriane Jean-Francois.
