Chelsea make surprise goalkeeper transfer decision ahead of summer window

Chelsea are not expected to pursue a new goalkeeper this summer despite ongoing struggles with Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen, a report has claimed.

Sanchez has been dropped to the bench after a series of high-profile mistakes, but summer signing Jorgensen has not fared much better in his place. A mistake in the defeat to Aston Villa was followed by a chorus of boos as Jorgensen took his time on the ball against Southampton - under the orders of manager Enzo Maresca.

Despite calls from fans for a new, reliable goalkeeper to be signed in the summer, The Times state Chelsea are not planning to bolster in between the sticks.

Chelsea officials want both Sanchez and Jorgensen to compete for minutes next season, but there could still be significant changes as the Blues' previous transfer business could lead to a potential shake-up.

Djordje Petrovic is due to return from his impressive loan spell with Strasbourg and could force his way back into Chelsea's starting lineup, while impending arrival Mike Penders is also seen as somebody with elite potential who could make an immediate impact.

Chelsea paid a fee of £17m to sign 19-year-old Penders last summer, with the towering teenager remaining with Genk until the end of the current campaign. He has six clean sheets from 14 appearances so far.

Goalkeeper has been a problem position for Chelsea ever since Thibaut Courtois' departure to Real Madrid in 2018. His replacement, Kepa Arrizabalaga, failed to impress after his £71m switch to Stamford Bridge but is currently enjoining a mini-resurgence on loan with Bournemouth.

Like Petrovic, Kepa will return to Chelsea this summer when his loan expires, but he is expected to be sold immediately as he enters the final 12 months of his contract.
