Cole Palmer has claimed the Chelsea squad were 'buzzing' for Alfie Gilchrist after he scored his first senior goal on Monday night.

The Blues hammered Everton 6-0 at Stamford Bridge to continue their push for European football, with Palmer scoring four times on their way to victory.

Nicolas Jackson was also on the scoresheet in the first half, while 20-year-old Gilchrist - on as a late substitute - thrashed in his first ever Chelsea goal in the last minute, cannoning in a half-volley after Jordan Pickford saved Ben Chilwell's initial effort.

Speaking to Sky Sports post-match, Palmer revealed his delight for Gilchrist getting among the goals.

"Everyone was buzzing for Alfie Gilchrist. He has been a Chelsea fan all his life and everyone is buzzing for him," Palmer said.

"After the previous game [against Sheffield United] we needed to come out and show something. It was a good performance tonight."

Gilchrist couldn't hide his delight both after scoring and then in the post-match interview, adding: "It was crazy.

"I joined in the attack, I saw an opportunity and smashed it hard as I could!

"Every time I have been here as a fan I look up and see everybody else score and to do it, it is a dream come true for my family."

Gilchrist joined the Chelsea academy in 2014 from Queens Park Rangers, rising through the ranks and becoming captain of their Under-23 side last season.

Having featured on the bench for the senior side towards the end of the 2022/23 campaign, Gilchrist was promoted into the first-team setup when Pochettino arrived at Stamford Bridge later that summer. He has made 13 appearances for Chelsea this season and recently signed a new contract running until 2026.
