The Al Nassr centre-forward was lambasted for his underwhelming displays for Portugal in Germany, with many suggesting it would be the five-time Ballon d'Or winner's final outing on the international stage.

However, Ronaldo continues to defy expectations. Boasting a desire for success seldom seen in even the most ardent professionals, he will be eyeing the possibility of turning out in red and green at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The simple answer is yes, Ronaldo is still donning Portugal colours. International football's top goalscorer has been heavily involved for his country even after a difficult Euro 2024, adding to his ludicrous goal tally in the 2024/25 UEFA Nations League.

The forward scored in Portugal's first three matches in the competition, including a late winner in a 2-1 victory over Scotland. As it stands, Ronaldo remains a firm part of Roberto Martinez's plans.

Ronaldo's displays in Germany highlighted his waning influence for Portugal. The skipper often proved a detriment to his side rather than a benefit, with his lack of movement in the final third causing Martinez issues.

However, there are no signs suggesting that Ronaldo will retire prior to the 2026 World Cup. If the legendary striker is available for selection, there is a strong chance he makes Portugal's squad for the tournament - providing they qualify, of course.

Speaking ahead of the Nations League earlier this year, he did address his retirement. "When I leave the national team, I won’t tell anyone in advance and it will be a very spontaneous decision on my part, but also a very well-thought-out one," admitted Ronaldo.

"Right now what I want is to be able to help the national team in their upcoming matches. We have the Nations League ahead of us and I would really like to play."

Regardless of whether it would prove a blessing or a curse for the Portuguese national team, there remains the distinct possibility that Ronaldo at least travels with the team to the World Cup.

How old will Cristiano Ronaldo be at the 2026 World Cup?

Qualification for the 2026 World Cup kicks off in March 2025 and Ronaldo will be 40 by that point. Portugal are likely to progress to the tournament, meaning he would be 41 when jetting off to North America.

Unfortunately for Ronaldo, he won't set the record for oldest World Cup performer, with that particular tag held by Egypt's Essam El Hadary. The goalkeeper was 45 years old when he took to the field during the 2018 World Cup.

Colombian goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon would also best Ronaldo, playing at the 2014 World Cup aged 43. The oldest outfield player is Cameroon icon Roger Milla, who was an impressive 42 years old at the 1994 championships when he also became the competition's oldest goalscorer.

However, Ronaldo would secure his status as the fourth-oldest player and the second-oldest outfield player to ever compete at the World Cup.
