Having retained the Yashin Trophy and been named The Best FIFA Men's Goalkeeper, it's perhaps no surprise that Emiliano Martinez was named in EA FC 25's Team of the Year.
The Argentine also won the Copa America, winning the Golden Glove award, and helped Aston Villa qualify for the Champions League in addition to reaching the semi-finals of the Conference League.
What Martinez achieved in 2024
- Copa America winner
- Copa America Golden Glove
- Yashin Trophy
- The Best FIFA Men's Goalkeeper
- Europa Conference League semi-finalist
- 4th place Premier League finish with Aston Villa - qualification to the Champions League
Aston Villa have enjoyed an impressive resurgence under the management of Unai Emery, going from potential relegation fodder under Steven Gerrard to established European contenders.
They are shining in the transfer market, bringing in a raft of quality players, and have got their act together on the field to play some of the most impressive football on display in the Premier League. Much of their success, however, has been laid by the foundations firmly rooted in goal by Martinez.
One of Villa's best pieces of business in the last few years, Martinez is fast closing on 200 appearances for the club across all competitions, where he's elevated his game from good to great. A beacon of consistency in terms of performance level, he is also a vocal leader that inspires his team, his supporters and gets under the skin of opponents.
Martinez's best trait is that he can back up his words, evidenced by his increasingly impressive CV. His record for Argentina is second to none, keeping 10 clean sheets across 2024, and his country's Copa America success was largely down to his stunning quarter-final performance when he saved two penalties against Ecuador.
He's been accused and even banned for "violating principles of fairplay", but there's no denying that Martinez is one of, if not the, most influential goalkeeper in world football at the moment. Saving 12 penalties for Argentina in shootouts from a possible 24 (career to date) proof of the effect he can have on opposition players.
