England centre-back Marc Guehi will miss the quarter-final clash with Switzerland at Euro 2024, should the Three Lions make it through, after picking up an early booking against Slovakia.

The Crystal Palace defender has been arguably England's most impressive performer at the tournament, seamlessly stepping into the shoes of former Manchester United captain Harry Maguire after he was ruled out of the tournament through injury.

Guehi was booked in the group stages along with Phil Foden, Conor Gallagher and Kieran Trippier, so knew he was walking a tightrope as England kicked off their last-16 clash against Slovakia.

But just minutes into the game, a nervy Trippier pass sold Guehi short, and he had no choice but to haul down Slovakia forward David Strelec. He was immediately handed a yellow card by Turkish referee Umut Meler, ruling him out of a potential quarter-final date with Switzerland.

Kobbie Mainoo and Jude Bellingham were also handed yellow cards in a frenetic opening 15 minutes, which saw Slovakia get behind England's backline on a couple of occasions.

England's prospective quarter-final opponents Switzerland booked their place in the latter stages of the tournament with a convincing 2-0 win over holders Italy on Saturday. Remo Freuler and Ruben Vargas were the goalscorers, ending Luciano Spalletti's hopes of retaining the title Italy won with victory over England at Wembley in July 2021.

The Swiss were also impressive in the group stages and were it not for a stoppage-time equaliser from Niklas Fullkrug, would have topped Group A ahead of holders Germany. Instead, they had to settle for second after a convincing win over Hungary was followed up by a draw with Scotland, who exited a major tournament at the group stage for an eighth consecutive time.
