Liverpool were denied local bragging rights by a 98th minute Everton equaliser in the last ever Merseyside derby played at Goodison Park on Wednesday night.

This was David Moyes' first derby clash with Liverpool since his first spell as Everton boss ended in 2014, while it was also the very first time at Goodison for Arne Slot.

Just days after Liverpool were knocked out of the FA Cup by Plymouth Argyle, Everton piled further misery on the Reds with Beto's early goal.

The advantage didn't last long, Alexis Mac Allister's header from Mohamed Salah's cross – a record-breaking assist from the Egypitan – tied things up only five minutes later.

Everton were the dominant side in the early stages of the second half, even having a would-be go-ahead goal from centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite ruled out for offside.

Into the final 20 minutes, Salah's well-taken goal put Liverpool in front for the first time, which looked like it would be decisive until James Tarkowski popped up with the equaliser deep into stoppage time.

In a bad-tempered finish, both sides had a player sent off - Abdoulaye Doucoure and Curtis Jones -after the final whistle, following a melee and heated exchanges. Arne Slot also saw red.

The result puts Liverpool seven points clear of Arsenal in the Premier League title race, still a strong lead with just 14 games of 2024/25 left to play. But not as commanding as nine would have been.
