Tottenham's best and worst players in disappointing Brighton defeat

Tottenham Hotspur threw away a 2-0 lead as they fell to a shocking 3-2 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday.

Their disappointing Premier League result ended their five-game winning streak in all competitions, while also pushing them down into ninth place in the league. Early strikes from Brennan Johnson and James Maddison gave Spurs a convincing lead before half-time, but three second-half goals from Brighton secured their victory at the Amex.

But who was to blame for Spurs' sudden downfall? Here are Tottenham's best and worst players from the defeat according to 90min's player ratings.

Tottenham's best player vs Brighton

Brennan Johnson - 7/10 

Brennan Johnson opened the scoring in the 23rd minute as he slotted a beautiful assist from Dominic Solanke into the back of the net. The 23-year-old dominated the first half of the game, moving with confidence up and down the pitch and seeing plenty of chances in front of goal.

The second half proved much more difficult for Johnson, who found it hard to build momentum while his team faced attacks from Brighton. His contributions did, however, see him score in six consecutive games for Spurs - becoming the first player to achieve this accolade since Harry Kane in 2019.

Honourable mention

Dominic Solanke - 7/10 

Tottenham summer signing Dominic Solanke was unlucky not to earn a goal on Sunday, but his efforts on the pitch certainly did not go unnoticed.

The striker was at the heart of all of Spurs' attacking play, driving strong balls up the pitch to help his teammates earn their spot on the scoresheet. His assist for Johnson's opener was perfectly timed and well positioned, making it easy for the Wales star to tap home.

He's enjoyed a strong start to life in north London, and has even received his first call-up to the England squad in seven years to reflect his efforts.

Tottenham's worst player vs Brighton

Destiny Udogie - 4/10

Destiny Udogie was at fault for arguably all of Brighton's second-half goals and struggled to make anything of a positive impression on Sunday.

His poor efforts of attempting to clear the ball directly led to Yankuba Minteh's strike just after the break and his weakness at the back highlighted a problem area for Spurs' defence.

He was clearly frustrated on the pitch, and later received a booking when his feelings boiled over. Udogie just could not get it right against Brighton and his mistakes proved costly for his team.

Dishonourable mention

Pedro Porro - 5/10

Pedro Porro really struggled to deal with the likes of Danny Welbeck and Yankuba Minteh in Brighton's attack as they ran riot during the second 45 minutes.

While Spurs' defence as a whole raised questions, Porro in particular looked to have a bad day and his efforts at the back just weren't good enough. He did have moments of quality in attack, making some solid passes to his teammates, but in his role at right-back, Porro failed.

It was a tough afternoon for the Spanish star, who could not step up to command Tottenham's backline.
