X reacts as Man City claim Community Shield after penalty shootout victory
- Man City beat Man Utd in the Community Shield on penalties
- Alejandro Garnacho and Bernardo Silva scored the only goals in regulation time
- Jonny Evans missed the crucial kick for Man Utd in the shootout
Manchester City got revenge on Manchester United for last season's FA Cup final by beating them in the Community Shield at Wembley on Saturday afternoon.
Alejandro Garnacho thought he had won the game for United in the 82nd minute with his dazzling run and finish but Bernardo Silva levelled seven minutes later with an accurate far-post header. With extra-time not in use for the Community Shield, the game went straight to penalties.
It was Jonny Evans who missed the crucial kick for United after flashing his penalty over the crossbar, with Manuel Akanji calmly converting the winning spot kick to win it for the Cityzens.
Here is how X users reacted to a dramatic Community Shield clash.
The Community Shield is ultimately nothing more than a glorified pre-season friendly and Pep Guardiola's team selection suggested he viewed it as exactly that.
While hamstrung by this summer's international tournaments, the likes of Rico Lewis, Oscar Bobb, James McAtee and Nico O'Reilly all made starts at Wembley for Man City.
It was Man City's young guns who helped the Premier League champions dominate the early stages, with young Norwegian Bobb particularly influential in the final third.
He danced past two defenders before firing over the bar from close range just after the 20-minute mark and then turned provider for McAtee following a United error, with the latter striking the post with a curled effort.
However, United started to take control of proceedings after half an hour and were guilty of spurning several handsome opportunities themselves.
The first saw Amad Diallo fail to pick out Mason Mount for a tap-in when he probably should have shot himself, with Marcus Rashford then bending his effort wide after an exceptional move.
United came close to taking the lead shortly after the restart when Bruno Fernandes darted in behind the City backline before swiftly turning and curling the ball into Ederson's top corner from 20 yards.
However, the goal was quickly ruled out for offside, with United's Portuguese maestro just making his run a second too early. Not a bad finish, though.
It was not a match of significant goal-mouth action but the best opportunities certainly fell to Man Utd. Their next inviting opening came with 15 minutes to spare and it was the misfiring Rashford who failed to convert.
A quick counter-attack saw Alejandro Garnacho release the England international but Rashford's tame left-footed effort clipped the outside of the post and rolled wide. A big, big miss.
But Rashford's profligacy didn't prove costly for United thanks to his fellow winger Garnacho, who fired the Red Devils ahead with an excellent finish just eight minutes before the full-time whistle.
The Argentine, who netted against City in last season's FA Cup final, produced the vital goal at Wembley, cutting in on his left foot and slotting beyond Ederson's outstretched glove.
However, Man Utd's joy would be cut short by Bernardo Silva on his birthday, with the Portuguese heading home an equaliser at the far post in the 89th minute to send the game to penalties.
Silva with another decisive moment on the big stage.
With nothing to separate the sides at the full-time whistle, a Manchester derby would be decided for the first time ever by a penalty shootout.
And it was City that came out on top after veteran Jonny Evans skied his penalty over Ederson's crossbar, with Manuel Akanji scoring the decisive kick moments later.
After three consecutive Community Shield defeats, City finally ended their curtain-raiser hoodoo.
