Mason Greenwood met with Manchester United officials at the club's Carrington training ground on Monday amid reports that former Champions League winners Marseille have made a move to sign the 22-year-old.
Greenwood is back at United this summer after his loan with Getafe expired, but he is not expected to be re-integrated into the squad and is instead available for transfer as he enters the final 12 months of his contract.
United held their first day of pre-season training on Monday and Greenwood was present at Carrington, but The Athletic note that the striker did not train and instead held meetings with senior officials before departing.
There is plenty of interest in Greenwood's services after a solid loan spell which saw him score eight goals and contribute six assists in La Liga last season.
Marseille and Lazio are both believed to have made formal approaches for Greenwood, whose price tag is not clear. Reports have valued Greenwood at between £20m and £40m.
According to Fabrizio Romano, United would be open to a loan exit for Greenwood but only if it included both an obligatory purchase clause and a sell-on clause.
Greenwood's preference is understood to be a move to Marseille and Lazio president Claudio Lotito effectively ruled his club out of the race with some inflammatory comments to the media.
"Last year, we were 20 minutes late due to a mismatch between the markets in Italy and England and so [a deal for Greenwood] fell through," Lotito revealed. "I had signed Greenwood last year when you didn't even know who he was. The facts proved me right because he did well [with Getafe].
"But it's not just Greenwood, there are also other players that you don't even know. I could tell you a name, which I won't because I want to keep you guessing, that is worth ten times Greenwood."
Greenwood has not trained with United since January 2022 when he was arrested for attempted rape, assault and coercive control. 13 months later, the case against the striker was discontinued. Greenwood has denied all wrongdoing.
