Gareth Southgate salary and contract: Will the England manager stay on after Euro 2024?
- Gareth Southgate is the highest-paid manager at Euro 2024
- Southgate has helped England to back-to-back Euros finals
- FA want the manager to continue in his role after the tournament
The role of national team manager transcends mere tactics and on-field adaptability. They operate as a figurehead, the country's ambassador and a leading light in times of strife.
Gareth Southgate is never too far away from unrelenting criticism. Often dubbed tactically inept and decried as the sort of bloke to wear a helmet while using a Peloton, the England manager has been forced to endure a barrage of slander not only this summer but throughout his successful tenure as Three Lions statesman.
The soft-spoken Southgate, however, has once again escaped through the suffocating external toxicity and re-emerged as the country's hero. England, courtesy of good fortune, immense preparation and Ollie Watkins' ability to strike across the goalkeeper, are into another European Championship final.
But will Sunday's final in Berlin be the last game Southgate oversees as England manager? Here's everything you need to know about his contract situation with the FA.
How much does Gareth Southgate earn as England manager?
The England manager reportedly earns a salary of approximately £5m (£100,000-a-week) after signing a contract extension in 2021.
Compared to club managers, that figure would make him the 12th highest-paid manager in the world behind the likes of Liverpool's Arne Slot (£6.8m) and PSG's Luis Enrique (£7.5m). Atletico Madrid's Diego Simeone remains the highest-paid manager on the planet and is said to be raking in a whopping £30m salary.
No manager at Euro 2024 is believed to be earning more than Southgate, although Roberto Mancini is the highest-paid international manager by a monster margin after he took the Saudi Arabia job. The Italian earns £21.5m-a-year.
When does Gareth Southgate's contract expire?
The extension Southgate signed in the wake of England's defeat in the Euro 2020 final runs until December 2024 and it was expected that the long-serving incumbent would step down after Euro 2024 no matter how the tournament panned out for England.
He had been linked with the Manchester United job at the end of the 2023/24 domestic season, but the Red Devils have since opted to stick with Erik ten Hag as manager. Despite his success with the Three Lions, Southgate isn't expected to have a long list of club suitors.
Will Gareth Southgate remain England manager after Euro 2024?
There certainly would have been a post-mortem had England bowed out of Euro 2024 to Slovakia in the round of 16. Having struggled through the group stage and on the brink of a 1-0 defeat to the lowly European nation, Southgate surely would have walked had the Three Lions succumbed.
However, their tournament was ignited by Jude Bellingham's last-gasp acrobatics, with Southgate's side riding a wave of momentum since. They've pulled through on penalties and at the death once more to advance into another final, and the FA are now keen on extending the manager's contract.
Southgate, of course, played a key role in England's semi-final win over the Netherlands as it was his two substitutes, Cole Palmer and Watkins, who combined for the winner.
The manager has said he will not consider his future until after the tournament, but the FA are now intent on retaining his services no matter how the Euro 2024 final pans out.
