Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has confessed his side simply did not deserve anything from their defeat to Monaco on Thursday.

Perhaps the most in-form side heading into the opening round of Champions League fixtures, Barcelona's bubble was abruptly burst as Eric Garcia's early red card left them on the back foot as they fell 2-1 to Monaco.

Flick's side managed 44% possession and just four shots on goal, whereas Monaco fired 18 strikes towards the unconvincing Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

"We tried, we defended with passion," Flick said of his side. "We made some mistakes but we tried to score goals. We had some chances but they deserved to win.

"We lost, okay, but now we have to come back stronger, recover. There is a match on Sunday. We have to give our best, fight for the team. We lost this match, but we will continue fighting."

Monaco boss Adi Hutter admitted Garcia's early dismissal helped his side's case but insisted they "could have won by more" in an impressive performance.

Despite the setback, Flick did his best to remain positive about Barcelona's ambitions this season.

"I'm not worried," he continued. "I have to analyse it, it's my job as a coach. I saw the players sad in the dressing room but now we have to recover. We will analyse the game, we will talk to the players to correct the things that were not done well. After the red card, the game changed.

"We saw a red card in the first ten minutes and that changed everything. These things happen, we have to accept it but I think we are strong enough to play in the Champions League. There are seven games left and we will win many games and achieve our objectives."
