Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag "expects to still be in charge" by the time he returns from a brief holiday coinciding with the October international break, despite intense scrutiny.

The spotlight is shining brightly on Ten Hag and United after a troubled start to the season has yielded only three wins across 11 games in all competitions.

As a result, there has been renewed speculation about a potential managerial chance, with former Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel once more the name chiefly linked.

United's executive committee, mostly the sporting hierarchy, convened in London on Tuesday for their scheduled monthly meeting, to be attended by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Joel Glazer. On the agenda were all sporting operations and other key areas – including the future of Old Trafford. And while it is likely that recent results and Ten Hag's position were discussed, that wasn't the reason for it.

Prior to the meeting, Sky Sports noted that Ten Hag is of the belief he retains the backing of the club and has "not been informed any differently". There is thought to have been no suggestion his job is under threat during regular contact with senior management, aligning with the club's stance. He has sought greater clarity on that front since the summer when United spoke with multiple candidates.

It is also pointed out that Tuchel has not received any "formal communication" that United intend to appoint him the Dutchman's successor.

United, having handed Ten Hag a new contract in the summer as a show of support, are not expected to make any rash or knee-jerk decisions. The report adds that while Ruud van Nistelrooy has been mooted as an interim, questions have been asked about timing at this early stage of the season and what the end goal of temporarily putting the club legend in the hot-seat would actually be.
