Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe was unfazed by Ruben Amorim's declaration that his side may be the worst in the club's 147-year history, a report has claimed.

The Red Devils' head coach delivered this hyperbolic outburst last week after watching his team slump to a 3-1 defeat at home to Brighton & Hove Albion. Amorim was so enraged by the sluggish performance that he reportedly smashed a monitor during a dressing room meltdown after the match.

Once he had dusted himself off, Amorim told the assembled media: "In ten games in Premier League, we won two. I know that. Imagine what this is for a fan of Manchester United. Imagine what this is for me. We are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach."

"We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United," Amorim concluded.

Ratcliffe has "no concern" over these dramatic statements according to The Guardian. United's minority shareholder, who has control over the sporting arm of the club, is not thought to fear that the players may turn against their head coach after such a severe public tongue-lashing.

Amorim rowed back on his comments this week, clarifying that he was criticising his own impact rather than the players.

Whoever is to blame, United need to somehow inspire a dramatic turnaround in form if they are to get anywhere near qualification for next season's European competition. The Red Devils are assured of a spot in the Europa League knockout stages, but start this weekend's round of Premier League matches slumped in 13th place. They boast a -5 goal difference and have scored just 27 times in 22 matches - fewer than 17th-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Amorim's unwanted history makers are back in action on Sunday, when they take on a Fulham side that are seven points better off.
