The €40m (£33.5m) release clause tied to the contract of Bayer Leverkusen's Jeremie Frimpong has now expired, but a move away from the Bundesliga could still be on the cards.

Frimpong enjoyed a fruitful campaign with Leverkusen, recording 14 goals in 47 appearances while playing a vital role in helping Xabi Alonso's side claim their first ever Bundesliga title. The Netherlands international was a standout character in Leverkusen's 51 day unbeaten run last season, attracting the eyes of potential suitors across Europe.

The 23-year-old, who graduated from Manchester City's academy, could make a grand return to England in order to play in the Premier League. Liverpool and Real Madrid have been linked, while 90min understands that Manchester United, former club City and Barcelona are potential new homes for the Dutch star.

Frimpong's summer release of clause €40m has now expired, per German publication Bild, but that doesn't necessarily mean a transfer is fully off the cards. Indeed, all that's changed is that Leverkusen are now fully in control of his future and can negotiate a fee on their terms.

The beaten Europa League finalists may choose to keep Frimpong next season, hoping his value and profile increases over the next 12 months, but they could also look to cash in and spend a potential windfall on new signings.

Liverpool, with new manager Arne Slot at the helm, are one side who could yet make a move for the 23-year-old before the summer is out. The Reds are yet to confirm any new signings, but view Frimpong as a potential replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is also a target for Real Madrid.

Man Utd, who have been very active in the window and have already confirmed the signings of Joshua Zirkee and Leny Yoro, may also need a new right-back as they may prepare to sanction the departure of Aaron Wan-Bissaka this summer – the Red Devils have interest in him from West Ham United among others.

Premier League champions City could also look to bring Frimpong back to the club as they hunt a long-term successor for Kyle Walker. 90min understands that internal talks have already been held to that end, though it remains to be seen whether or not Walker, who has two years remaining on his contract, will be the subject of a bid from the Saudi Pro League.
