Joe Gomez has decided to stay at Liverpool after holding positive talks with new head coach Arne Slot, a report has claimed.

The defender has been linked with a move away from Anfield in recent weeks as the Reds' new era under Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes starts to take shape.

It was previously reported that Gomez was wanted by Newcastle United in a part-exchange deal which would have seen Anthony Gordon head to Liverpool. The proposed move would have cost Liverpool £75m to help Newcastle with their PSR worries, but they would have paid £45m in return for Gomez.

Newcastle resolved their PSR concerns with the sales of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson, and so pulled the plug on a Gordon-Gomez swap.

In the following weeks, further stories emerged claiming Gomez was unhappy with being used as a makeweight to acquire Gordon and was considering his future on Merseyside.

But The Times report Gomez is 'committed' to the new Liverpool project and will stay at the club beyond the closure of the transfer window.

Gomez has returned to Liverpool training for pre-season after forming part of the England squad that reached the Euro 2024 final. He rejoined a small group of players, featuring the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, back at their AXA Training Centre as opposed to meeting up with the rest of the squad on their pre-season tour of the USA.

Liverpool have two further friendlies to play before the start of the new season, taking on La Liga duo Sevilla and Las Palmas in back-to-back games on Sunday at Anfield.

Slot's first competitive game as Liverpool boss comes on August 17 with a trip to newly-promoted Ipswich Town.
