Luka Modric is set to join fellow Real Madrid veteran Toni Kroos in extending his contract with the club for another season, according to reports.

Manager Carlo Ancelotti is bringing through a new generation of midfielders at the Bernabeu including Jude Bellingham, Federico Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni.

With the future in mind, both Kroos and Modric looked likely to bring their trophy-laden spells in the Spanish capital to a close at the end of the 2023/24 season.

However, news of Kroos sticking around for another year broke in late March - though not yet official - and now, perhaps more surprisingly, reports of Modric's desire to stay have emerged. Both AS and Marca claim the Croatian Ballon d'Or winner has accepted his decreased playing time this season, though he has still proved to be a vital squad member in the latter stages of the campaign, particularly during the run to the Champions League final.

Both reports highlight the role of club president Florentino Perez in facilitating their stays.

There is now an 'agreement in principle' for Modric to continue with Madrid, with his agent Vladica Lemic also telling Arab media Kooora: "The most likely thing is that he will stay one more year and continue writing history.

"Real Madrid is the best club in the world and is led by the best president in the history of football. Luka Modric is a Real Madrid fan who loves the club and considers it his home."

Kroos and Modric have made 32 and 30 appearances in La Liga respectively this season, though the German has played 2,043 minutes compared to the former Tottenham Hotspur star's 1,590.

Kroos has also been utilised more often in the Champions League, starting nine European fixtures while Modric has been included in the XI just three times.
