Liverpool injuries: Latest team news before Premier League clash with Newcastle
- Liverpool flying high under Arne Slot domestically and in Europe
- Reds have been in relentless form ahead of trip to Newcastle
- Injuries still limiting Slot's options in certain departments
In the Netherlands, there is an expression which goes: "First do what you need to do, second do what's useful and then do what's pleasant."
Liverpool's new Dutch coach Arne Slot has rattled through that list of objectives and is pleasantly sat at the Premier League's summit. A sensational week that involved wins over Southampton and European champions Real Madrid was capped by an exceptional display and victory against Premier League title holders Manchester City last Sunday.
Those who had dismissed Liverpool as challengers due to their kind fixture list at the start of the new campaign have been forced to reassess their position as the Reds lead the way domestically and on the continent.
While Liverpool have not been inundated with injuries in the opening months of the season, they have had to battle on without some key figures across the pitch.
Here's all the latest Liverpool team news ahead of a tricky trip to Newcastle United on Wednesday evening.
Liverpool's injury concerns
Alisson
Liverpool have been without their first-choice goalkeeper since the start of October. Alisson was always expected to miss the subsequent seven matches, but there had been hope of his return following the November international break.
Slot has confirmed that Alisson is edging ever closer to a return but that Liverpool are keen not to rush him back into the fold, especially considering the mightily impressive form of deputy Caoimhin Kelleher.
"We are just waiting for the moment that Alisson is completely fit because Caoimh is doing too well to put Alisson in goal if he is only on 50 per cent [fitness] and that would not be good for Alisson and not be good for the team," admitted Slot.
"He’s getting there. It might take a few more extra days but he’s getting closer and closer and like I’ve always said the end phase of rehab is always the period where you feel like, ‘OK, is he really there or does he need a few extra days?’
"But he will be in goal before the end of December if things continue like they are."
Kostas Tsimikas
Kostas Tsimikas has emerged as a handy rotational piece for Slot at the start of 2024/25, especially following the questionable form of Andy Robertson. However, the Greek defender has missed the last three matches.
After suffering a minor ankle injury in training, Tsimikas was out of action for meetings with Southampton, Madrid and Man City, and is almost certain to miss out on Wednesday's journey to St James' Park.
Conor Bradley
Conor Bradley had a night to remember up against Kylian Mbappe during Liverpool's impressive win over Real Madrid last week. However, the adoration of the Anfield crowd came at a cost for the Northern Irishman, who pulled his hamstring in the victory.
Slot revealed after the match that Bradley would be missing for "a few weeks" and sure enough the right-back was absent during the weekend win over Man City, even if the return of Trent Alexander-Arnold was welcome.
Ibrahima Konate
Ibrahima Konate was another casualty of the victory over Madrid and has been given the same injury timeline as Bradley. During the hectic winter schedule, missing several weeks can result in a significant number of matches on the sidelines.
Konate's knee injury could have been more serious, with Liverpool fans relieved that he will only be missing until the end of the month. Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah will step in for the Frenchman in the meantime.
Diogo Jota
Injuries have followed Diogo Jota around like a bad smell throughout his Liverpool career. The luckless Portuguese forward sustained a severe blow to his ribs during a collision with Chelsea's Tosin Adarabioyo in October.
There were hopes that Jota would be available after the November international period but the forward is yet to be seen. He's expected back in the relatively near future but an exact date hasn't been pencilled in for his comeback.
Federico Chiesa
It's been over two months since Federico Chiesa last appeared for the Reds, and Liverpool are taking a cautious approach in regards to his re-integration.
Injuries have followed the Italian around ever since he tore his ACL at the start of 2022. Slot has revealed that Chiesa is now back in team training but the Reds will be eager not to rush him back too quickly.
It appears likely that he will be unavailable for the clash with Newcastle.
