Liverpool backed away from a deal to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United as they were reluctant to send them Jarell Quansah as part of the deal, according to a report.

Newcastle are in need of selling players in order to comply with the Premier League's Profit & Sustainability Rules. The deadline for the 2023-24 financial period is June 30, though this is said not to be a hard deadline and deals completed in the following days could still count towards this time slot.

Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak have both been heavily linked with exits as the Magpies go in search of much-needed funds to avoid penalties, and now Gordon has been floated on the market.

The Daily Mail report that Newcastle held talks with Liverpool this week over the sale of Gordon, and they were ready to green-light the winger's move to Anfield.

However, the move fell apart when Newcastle asked for Quansah to be used as a makeweight in the deal, but the Reds were reluctant to lose the young centre-back and pulled out of negotiations.

Quansah, who turned 21 in January, is coming off the back of a fine breakthrough campaign for Liverpool, featuring 33 times last season. He was named in England's provisional Euro 2024 squad but didn't make the final cut.

Though Liverpool have not made another offer for Gordon without the inclusion of Quansah, talks could yet resume over the weekend.

Gordon is also attracting interest from Paris Saint-Germain, who are on the hunt for a successor to Real Madrid-bound Kylian Mbappe.

If the Liverpool deal had gone through this week, Gordon would have undergone a medical in Germany near England's Euro 2024 training base. The Three Lions face Slovakia in the last 16 on Sunday and there have been increasing calls for the 23-year-old to start.

Gordon signed for Newcastle from Liverpool's rivals Everton in January 2023 for £45m. After a slow start on Tyneside, he has become a fan favourite and one of the best players in their squad.
