Liverpool predicted lineup vs Milan - Champions League
- Liverpool travel to Milan in the expanded 2024/25 Champions League
- Reds suffered shock 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Saturday
- Arne Slot could make changes for Tuesday's trip to Italy
Liverpool begin their 2024/25 Champions League campaign on Tuesday when they travel to old foes Milan in the competition's recently reformatted league phase.
The expanded 36-team Champions League has done away with the group stage in favour of a single league table, with Liverpool aiming to be one of the eight sides that automatically qualify for the last 16. Their hunt for a seventh European Cup starts with a trip to Italian giants Milan, who have claimed the title seven times themselves.
Liverpool had made a perfect start under new head coach Arne Slot but they were brought back down to earth by Nottingham Forest on Saturday. Callum Hudson-Odoi's goal handed the Dutchman his first defeat in the Anfield dugout and he will expect a stronger performance from his players midweek.
Here is how Slot could line Liverpool up in Italy.
Liverpool predicted lineup vs Milan (4-2-3-1)
GK: Alisson - The Brazilian was naturally disappointed with Saturday's result and was unable to prevent Hudson-Odoi from winning it for the visitors. He may be busier at San Siro than he was at Anfield last time out.
RB: Trent Alexander-Arnold - After some dazzling displays with England over the international period, Alexander-Arnold struggled to replicate his national team form against Forest. He remains Liverpool's chief creator from right-back.
CB: Ibrahima Konate - Having wrestled a starting spot off Jarell Quansah, Konate has been in fine form in a red shirt this season despite a wobble with France over the international break. Tammy Abraham will prove a handful for the 25-year-old.
CB: Virgil van Dijk - Liverpool's captain and organiser at the back, Van Dijk is a guaranteed starter when available this season - potentially his last at Anfield. He will need to dominate the aerial battle with Abraham.
LB: Andy Robertson - Yet to hit his lofty heights under Slot, especially in the opposition half. However, his place in the starting lineup is under no threat considering Liverpool's other options in his position.
DM: Alexis Mac Allister - The tempo-setter in Liverpool's midfield, Mac Allister has often been the bridge between defence and attack since his move from Brighton. Performed admirably in defeat to Forest over the weekend after a tough international period.
DM: Ryan Gravenberch - After inheriting the number six position for the Netherlands, Gravenberch was deployed in a deep-lying role again at the weekend. Another strong outing will only build his confidence in an unfamiliar position.
RW: Mohamed Salah - The Egyptian king looked off the pace against Forest after travelling across Africa with his country, but he scored home and away against Milan in the 2021/22 Champions League group stage.
AM: Curtis Jones - With Dominik Szoboszlai struggling against Forest and Harvey Elliott sidelined, Jones may be handed a start having missed the opening weeks of the season through injury. He's certainly more useful in the final third than the defensive third.
LW: Luis Diaz - Offered glimpses of his brilliant early season form on Saturday, striking the post with a good effort, but Slot will be expecting more from him this weekend up against former Tottenham defender Emerson Royal.
ST: Darwin Nunez - Diogo Jota was by no means poor against Forest but he could use a breather. That may pave the way for Darwin Nunez to come into the team for his first start under Slot.
