Liverpool have turned down a bid worth up to £15m from Southampton for young winger Fabio Carvalho, according to a report.

The 21-year-old has featured in the Reds' pre-season tour of the United States and scored his second goal of the summer in the 3-0 victory over Premier League rivals Manchester United in South Carolina.

Carvalho spent the second half of last season on loan with Hull City and impressed, contributing nine goals and two assists in 20 Championship appearances.

Southampton had been interested in acquiring his services during the January transfer window and have now returned with an offer to sign Carvalho permanently, but The Athletic have revealed the Merseyside club have turned it down.

Liverpool are not interested in sanctioning another loan exit for the former Fulham attacker and consider Southampton's offer to be significantly below their valuation.

Carvalho is keen to break into Liverpool's starting XI this season and recently revealed he wants to nail down the number 10 position at Anfield.

The Reds are well stocked in attack but the absences of Luis Giaz, Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota during pre-season have handed Carvalho the chance to impress new boss Arne Slot.

He has returned that faith with goals against Arsenal and United but whether he will earn consistent minutes ahead of the club's more established first-team stars is still up in the air.

The Athletic add that further discussions will take place between the two parties to discuss his future upon the squad's return to the United Kingdom. Carvalho still has another three years left to run on his contract.

The former England youth international will have one final chance to stake his claim for a regular starting place in Liverpool's final pre-season outing against Spanish side Sevilla next weekend.
