Luka Modric has become the most decorated player in Real Madrid's history after lifting his 27th trophy with the team on Wednesday

The La Liga champions kicked off the European football season with a 2-0 victory over Serie A side Atalanta - who won the right to face off against the Champions League victors after beating Bayer Leverkusen in May's Europa League final - in the UEFA Super Cup.

The Spanish giants came out on top thanks to goals from Federico Valverde and new signing Kylian Mbappe - who marked his Madrid debut in incredible fashion.

Croatian star Modric has also hit the headlines thanks to his involvement Wednesday night's clash, coming on for the final 15 minutes of the fixture to become the most decorated player in Madrid's history.

While the UEFA Super Cup was the first trophy Modric has raised aloft as Madrid captain, it was his 27th overall during his legendary 12 year spell at the Santiago Bernabeu. The midfielder has won six Champions Leagues, five Club World Cups, five European Super Cups, four La Liga titles, two Copas del Rey and five Spanish Super Cups.

The 38-year-old, who moved to Los Blancos in 2012 after leaving Tottenham Hotspur, has made over 530 for the club, playing a vital role in the Spanish giants' success since arriving in Madrid.

Modric's 27th trophy puts him ahead of former captain Nacho Fernandez - who left the club as a free agent this summer. Dani Carvajal boasts 26 pieces of Madrid silverware, while Karim Benzema and Marcelo are level on 25 trophies.

Madrid will hope to see even more success in what could be Modric's final season at the Santiago Bernabeu in 2024/25. Their season-opener will see them travel to Mallorca on Sunday, while their first Champions League fixture is expected to take place in September.
