Manchester United continue their hunt for Europa League glory when they visit Lyon in the first leg of their quarter-final tie on Thursday night.

The Red Devils journey to France having stumbled to a drab goalless draw with local rivals Manchester City at the weekend, the result leaving them 13th in the Premier League table with only seven games to play. They are on course for their lowest ever finish since the competition's inception in 1992 and winning the Europa League can be the only silver lining come the end of an otherwise gloomy campaign.

The good news for United is that their performances and results have been much improved on the continent. They remain the only side unbeaten in the Europa League this term and were emphatic victors against Real Sociedad in the last 16.

Lyon will prove an almighty challenge, though. The French side have turned the corner since Paulo Fonseca's arrival and have now won eight of their last ten matches in all competitions, including two comfortable victories over FCSB in the round of 16. The Portuguese coach is currently serving a nine-month suspension for angrily confronting a referee earlier this season, but, fortunately for Les Gones, that ban doesn't apply in European competition.

Here is 90min's guide to the first leg in Lyon.

Lyon team news

Lyon will be without two primary forwards on Thursday as Malick Fofana, who is sidelined with an ankle injury, was recently joined in the treatment room by fellow young winger Ernest Nuamah. The Ghana international had been in excellent form before tearing his ACL just seven minutes into the weekend win over Lille.

There are a band of familiar faces that will greet United supporters on Thursday, most notably former Red Devils midfielder Nemanja Matic - who has had some choice words for Andre Onana during the first leg build-up.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Alexandre Lacazette are former Arsenal stars, while Moussa Niakhate, Duje Caleta-Car, Jordan Veretout and Said Benrahma all have Premier League experience.

United have been handed two significant injury boosts ahead of the trip to Lyon, with Kobbie Mainoo and Luke Shaw named among the 23-man travelling party. Neither are likely to start as they return to full fitness but they could be involved from the bench.

However, Matthijs de Ligt and Toby Collyer have both missed the journey to France, the former suffering with a muscle strain and the latter a knock.

Jonny Evans, Ayden Heaven, Lisandro Martinez and Amad Diallo have all missed out as expected but there are spots for young talents Jaydan Kamason, Godwill Kukonki and Jack Moorhouse.

Lyon vs Man Utd score prediction

United have more often than not underwhelmed this season but they have generally saved their best performances for the European stage, especially since Amorim's arrival in November. As a bare minimum, they will want to avoid defeat ahead of next week's second leg at Old Trafford.

Lyon will make that tricky, however, with Fonseca's men in strong form. Forward injuries are unlikely to suppress their immense attacking threat - they have scored two or more in their last 11 matches - but the French side will allow opportunities at the other end should United's attackers decide to turn up.

Prediction: Lyon 2-1 Man Utd
