Manchester United have requested a January meeting with Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies as they look to beat Real Madrid to his signature this summer, reports in Germany claim.

Davies is approaching the final six months of his current contract and has long been lined up by Madrid as a possible bargain but United have recently emerged as suitors of the Canada international.

New United head coach Ruben Amorim is keen to sign a new left-back and, according to German journalist Christian Falk, that could be Davies as club officials have requested a meeting with the 24-year-old to discuss a possible free transfer to Old Trafford.

Madrid are set to adopt their usual stance with free agents, challenging Davies to reject interest from elsewhere if he truly wants to make the move to the Santiago Bernabeu.

However, Davies may end up snubbing the chance to join either side as Sky Germany state there has been significant progress in talks with Bayern over an extension.

A new contract seemed impossible earlier this year but Davies is now thought to have lowered his salary demands, opening the door to a new deal with Bayern. Negotiations are at an advanced stage and several key details have already been agreed.

United are aware of his situation and are reported to "assume" that Davies will sign an extension, but will still present their case in order to convince him to move on.

Bayern officials, who have spoken publicly about Davies' future over the past few months, are growing in confidence that a deal will be struck, boosting manager Vincent Kompany as he looks to re-establish the club as the dominant force in German football.
