Manchester United are set to welcome former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy to Erik ten Hag's coaching staff as part of a summer shake-up.

Van Nistelrooy, who scored 150 goals in 219 games for United between 2001 and 2006, has spent the majority of his managerial career with PSV Eindhoven, primarily in academy roles before a successful one-year stint in charge of the senior side in the 2022/23 season.

Having been out of work since, 47-year-old Van Nistelrooy was targeted by Burnley this summer but Fabrizio Romano states the legendary former striker is heading back to United to work alongside Ten Hag.

The final details of Van Nistelrooy's return still need to be finalised but there are not expected to be any issues.

Alongside Van Nistelrooy, United are also expected to confirm the signing of 52-year-old Rene Hake, who is set to leave his role as Go Ahead Eagles manager to form part of Ten Hag's coaching staff.

"We are aware of the interest, but United has not yet reported to us," Go Ahead Eagles director Paul Bosvelt told Sportnieuws. "We understand that it is a great opportunity. But we will have to wait and see."

Ten Hag has spoken openly about his close relationship with Hake, having worked together at Twente earlier in their careers.

One man who is leaving United's backroom staff is popular coach Benni McCarthy, who will depart upon the expiry of his contract this summer. The Athletic state McCarthy is keen to return to management.
