Manchester United are narrowing down their transfer targets ahead of a crucial summer if the club are to realise ambitions of becoming Premier League champions within the next few years, with strikers Liam Delap and Matheus Cunha reported to be emerging as options.
Fresh firepower in attacking positions is a priority, with United's league output lagging way behind their main rivals and already linked with a plethora of strikers of varying experience and cost.
At the more expensive end of that list has been Viktor Gyokeres, who is well known to Ruben Amorim, Hugo Ekitike and Victor Osimhen, who is delaying his decision. Delap is less polished but substantially more affordable, with Wolves star Cunha also becoming a serious target too.
Both Delap and Cunha have clauses in their respective contracts that would price a double swoop for the pair at just over £90m. The Athletic writes that a £62.5m release clause for Cunha and a £30m relegation clause for Delap is "plausible" for United as long as they "sell well".
Money could be made selling Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia. The club could get £65m for Rashford and Sancho alone, if Aston Villa are willing to take their option on the former and Chelsea don't pay a £5m penalty to back out of an obligation on the latter.
Cunha is described as "potentially a good fit" for one of the split 'number ten' positions in Amorim's system, a more experienced player at the age of 26 ready to immediately make the team better. He is already proven in the Premier League, previously attracting Arsenal interest. His release clause could even be negotiated into instalments, meaning it wouldn't all have to be paid up front.
The Brazilian, who flopped at Atletico Madrid before finding his groove with Wolves, has stated his desire to move on to a bigger club again – although he admirably refused to move in January due to not wanting to abandon his colleagues and fans midway through a tough campaign.
United are more generally continuing to target younger talents who can morph into stars at Old Trafford, which is where Delap comes in. He is well known to technical director Jason Wilcox from their time together at Manchester City's academy and has shown promise with 12 Premier League goals in a struggling Ipswich side destined for a swift return to the Championship.
