Manchester United have backed away from talks over Manuel Ugarte due to Paris Saint-Germain's lofty asking price, according to a report.

The Red Devils remain in the market for a new midfielder, with reports suggesting they are looking to find a complementary partner to Kobbie Mainoo in particular.

Ugarte emerged as one of their primary candidates in recent weeks, with United and PSG keeping an open dialogue over a transfer.

However, The Athletic report that United have cooled their interest and will look at other targets due to Les Parisiens' refusal to come down on their £51.4m asking price.

PSG bought Ugarte for that sum from Sporting CP last summer and do not want to make a loss on the Uruguayan. Reports from France recently suggested they would be open to loaning the midfielder with a high purchase clause due to signing Joao Neves from Benfica.

But United are taking a stand and will not make further moves for Ugarte unless PSG soften their stance and agree to sell him for a lower price. PSG are said to be 'relaxed' about the situation however, believing they could still shift Ugarte to other suitors on their own terms.

United have made two signings already this summer, acquiring Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna and PSG target Leny Yoro from Lille.

However, Yoro is expected to miss three months of action after sustaining a foot injury in pre-season and recently underwent surgery to correct the issue. Zirkzee, meanwhile, has joined up with his new teammates at the club's Carrington training base following his post-Euro 2024 holiday.

Erik ten Hag's side return to action on Saturday when they take on rivals Manchester City in the Community Shield at Wembley. They will then take part in the Premier League's curtain-raiser the following Friday when Fulham make the trip to Old Trafford.
