Manchester United recorded their worst defensive month since records began across December 2024.

After a briefly steady start to the Ruben Amorim era, United's fortunes have tumbled to the ground in recent weeks. Monday's 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United marked a fourth consecutive defeat in all competitions and a fifth loss in their last six Premier League games.

In their nine December fixtures across all competitions, United shipped a total of 18 goals. Never before in recorded history have the Red Devils conceded more in a single month, matching their miserable tally from all the way back in March 1964. Amorim confessed after the game that United had fallen into a relegation battle as a result of the ongoing struggles.

Further compounding United's misery, the loss to Newcastle at Old Trafford marked the third straight league defeat at home - the first time United have been on such a run since 1979 - while it was also the first time United have failed to score in three straight losses for the first time in nine years.

Amorim is already under immense pressure after so far failing to impress with his desire to switch the team to the 3-4-2-1 formation he previously enjoyed success with at former club Sporting CP. Before the game, he vowed he would not change his ideas.

"I was hired because of that idea, and in these difficult moments if you change your mind, it is the end for any coach," he said.

Now, however, Amorim appears to have left the door open to a potential tweak to his preferred system.

"It is a choice that everyone has to make in football," he said after the loss to Newcastle. "If I think this is the best thing for the team, I will continue to pass my message."
