Manchester United are expected to advance negotiations for Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt following the conclusion of his Euro 2024 campaign, a report has claimed.
De Ligt will be allowed to leave Bayern this summer, despite fans protesting against this decision, and the club are in talks with United over a transfer.
The Bavarians are even ready to take a hit on the €67m (£56.4m) they paid up front to sign De Ligt from Juventus in 2022 and are hoping to shift him for closer to €50m (£42m).
Negotiations have been slow moving to this point as De Ligt had been away with the Netherlands at Euro 2024, but they were knocked out at the semi-final stage by England on Wednesday night.
Shortly prior to that defeat, BILD reported there was 'movement' in the United camp, who have been ready to advance talks as soon as De Ligt was no longer on international duty.
With the Netherlands now out, it is expected that the Red Devils will make a fresh play for De Ligt and the situation could 'move quickly'.
United are in the market for at least one new centre-back. In addition to De Ligt, they have had two bids rejected for Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite and one accepted for Leny Yoro, though the Lille defender is holding out for a move to Real Madrid and there has not been any further movement on that front.
Though De Ligt was called into the Netherlands' squad for Euro 2024, he did not play a single minute of tournament football this summer, remaining an unused substitute for all six of their games. Virgil van Dijk and Stefan de Vrij were Ronald Koeman's preferred starters, while Micky van de Ven was often turned to off the bench.
