Man Utd send message to Raphael Varane following retirement
- Manchester United offer heartfelt message to former defender
- Varane announced decision to retire on Wednesday
- Centre-back enjoyed three seasons at Old Trafford
Manchester United have issued a heartfelt message to former defender Raphael Varane after he announced his retirement from football.
The 31-year-old revealed his shock decision to hang up his boots on Wednesday, bringing his successful career to an end. Varane had recently signed for newly-promoted Serie A side Como on a free transfer from United, but chose to cut this journey short after picking up another injury at the start of the season.
He moved to Old Trafford in 2021 after leaving Real Madrid, helping United to their first major trophy in six years when they lifted the Carabao Cup in 2023. He was also part of the side that lifted the FA Cup in 2024 after beating local rivals Manchester City to the trophy.
His three seasons with the Red Devils were interrupted with injuries, but the centre-back still managed to leave a positive mark on the club.
"You represented our colours with great distinction during your three seasons at Old Trafford," United said in a tribute to the Frenchman. "We thank you for your humility, leadership and commitment. May these qualities serve you well in your next venture.
"Once a Red, always a Red."
Varane responded to the kind statement, posting a reply that read: "Special moments we shared! Manchester is a home away from home for me and my family. See you all again soon."
His move to Como from United in July came as exciting news for fans of the Italian minnows, with the defender signing a two-year contract that would see him play in the Serie A under former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas. The Spaniard was appointed Como's head coach after a successful campaign as Osian Roberts' assistant.
He managed just one appearance for Como, playing 23 minutes of their Coppa Italia clash with Sampdoria.
