Christian Eriksen is expected to assess his options in the coming weeks ahead of the expiry of his Manchester United contract.

The 33-year-old's return to the highest level after a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 is one of football's greatest ever stories and is testament to the character and ability of the Danish midfielder.

Eriksen returned to competitive action in January 2022, signing a six-month contract with Brentford before joining United the following summer on a three-year deal.

Once an attacking midfielder who had a great eye for goal during his seven-season stint at Tottenham Hotspur, Eriksen has transitioned into a deep-lying playmaker in his later years. But with a decline in pace evident, he's struggled to command regular minutes for United amid their ongoing woes.

Just 632 minutes of Premier League football and three full games have been afforded to Eriksen during 2024/25, who is now a rotation option at best for Ruben Amorim behind first-choice duo Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo.

With his contract up in the summer, Fabrizio Romano reports that Eriksen will start to assess his next career move in the coming weeks, knowing that he won't be staying at Old Trafford.

Eriksen's departure will help lessen United's hefty wage bill to facilitate new signings for Amorim. Marcus Rashford and Antony were both shipped out on loan in January – combined they are believed to earn in excess of £600,000-per-week – and it's likely both will be looking for permanent summer exits.

Amorim has a clear and defined style of play that he wants to implement – a system Rashford and Antony aren't particularly suited to when compared to the likes of Amad Diallo and Bruno Fernandes, who have often been tasked with playing in advanced roles behind a central striker.

High-intensity pressing in midfield is something Amorim asks of his central midfielders, which doesn't align with Eriksen's strengths heading into the tail end of his career.

Whether or not Eriksen is afforded another Premier League opportunity remains to be seen, with his other career experience including a five-year spell at Ajax and a short period with Inter, who were forced to release the Dane from his contract after he had an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator installed in his chest in the aftermath of his cardiac arrest – a device not permitted in Serie A.
