Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has revealed left-back Luke Shaw has suffered a setback in his attempts to return from a thigh injury that could rule him out of Euro 2024.

Shaw has managed just 12 appearances in the Premier League this season in between two muscle injuries, the latest of which has kept him on the sidelines since the middle of February.

Ten Hag had initially been hopeful Shaw would return before the end of the season, but optimism has been fading over the past few weeks and now the United boss has revealed Shaw may not even be fit enough for Euro 2024.

"Luke is more complicated, in this moment," Ten Hag said. "I think it's less of a chance that he will make it [to the FA Cup final] but there is still a chance. He had a setback, and now we have to find out how he is."

Asked whether Shaw and England teammate Harry Maguire could be fit for the Euros, Ten Hag responded: "For England, I can't say - it's not up to me. But for the cup final, we're working on it.

"Harry Maguire, I think it's a fair chance he will be available."

England manager Gareth Southgate is due to name his provisional squad for this summer's tournament on Tuesday and will have to make a decision on Shaw, who is likely to be included at this stage to allow Three Lions officials to make their own checks on his fitness.

The boss can choose as many players as he wants for the preliminary squad but must have a final list of 26 names to submit by 7 June.

Southgate has openly admitted Shaw is his preferred starter ahead of Chelsea's Ben Chilwell, who has also been battling a knee injury but made it back to the bench for the Blues' 2-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion in midweek.

Newcastle United right-back Kieran Trippier has been a regular feature on the left for England under Southgate, who may have to look elsewhere for minutes if Shaw is unable to play this summer.
