Man Utd suffer double injury blow in Arsenal pre-season defeat

Manchester United suffered a double injury blow in their pre-season friendly with Arsenal as Rasmus Hojlund and Leny Yoro both had to be substituted in the 2-1 defeat.

The Danish striker had fired the Red Devils into a first-half lead at SoFi Stadium in California but strikes from Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli ensured Erik ten Hag's side were consigned to a second defeat in their summer friendly schedule.

Hojlund and Yoro limped off during the first 45 minutes with knocks and the manager revealed United will have to wait before learning the severity of the problems.

Speaking after the game, Ten Hag revealed: "Of course it is too short [to know about their injuries] and we have to wait over 24 hours, then we will hopefully know more.

"We were careful especially with Leny [Yoro] as he only did 50 per cent of the [training] sessions. He has to come up but let's be positive and see what comes out."

Veteran centre-back Jonny Evans added: "You don't want any injuries, especially in pre-season. It's one of the biggest things you're trying to avoid while also getting fit at the same time. We don't know how bad the injuries are. Muscle injuries aren't great. Rasmus hinted it was his hamstring. I'm not sure about Leny yet."

Injuries wrecked United's 2023/24 campaign as they finished eighth in the Premier League, though they did manage to save their season with victory in the FA Cup final against Manchester City.

In more positive news, Harry Maguire played the first half before being withdrawn after missing Euro 2024, while there were also minutes for Casemiro, Marcus Rashford and Mason Mount.

A pre-agreed penalty shootout took place at the end of the contest which allowed United to secure some sort of victory, triumphing 4-3 from the spot as goalkeeper Andre Onana made saves from Kai Havertz and Jakub Kiwior.

United are next in action when they take on La Liga outfit Real Betis at Snapdragon Stadium in the early hours of Thursday morning.
