Manchester City have confirmed the permanent departure of understudy left-back Sergio Gomez to Real Sociedad.

The 23-year-old joined the eight-time Premier League champions from Anderlecht in 2022, going on to make 38 appearances in all competitions en route to lifting six trophies.

Gomez wasn't able to command a regular place in Pep Guardiola's side – such is the competition for places at the Etihad Stadium – and has been a regular fixture of transfer gossip columns throughout 2024.

His exit to Real Sociedad, who reached the round of 16 in last season's Champions League, has now been confirmed by City, with the player penning his goodbyes to the club's supporters in a statement released through official channels.

"It's time to leave Manchester City but I'd like to thank everyone at the CFA for their support and guidance during my time at the club," Gomez said.

"Being part of such a talented, ambitious and successful squad was a true honour and winning a host of major trophies, including the treble, is something I will never forget and will always look back fondly on.

"I am excited for this new adventure but I wish Pep Guardiola and the players every success in the future."

City's director of football, Txiki Begiristain, who has been praised for his dealings in the transfer market, said of the Spaniard: "I'd like to thank Sergio for his time at Manchester City.

"He is an impressive young footballer, with a good attitude and strong application, who I have no doubt will make his mark and excel in the coming years.

"We wish him the best for the future."

City have also allowed Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Tommy Doyle to depart on permanent deals this summer, to Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers respectively, with their only incoming arrival being Brazilian forward Savio.

The 20-year-old was on loan at Girona from Troyes last season – both clubs owned by City Group – and was one of the club's leading lights as they surprisingly challenged Real Madrid and Barcelona for La Liga title glory.
