Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta lauded the club's "historic" record after achieving a 27th Premier League victory of the season on Sunday.

The Gunners defeated Manchester United at Old Trafford to keep their title dreams alive, needing just one goal from Leandro Trossard in the 20th minute to secure all three points.

In doing so, Arsenal surpassed the 26 wins their Invincibles of 2003/04 and double winners of 2001/02 recorded, setting a new club record for most games won in a 38-game league campaign.

Speaking after the game, Arteta was full of praise for his squad and their momentous achievement.

He said: "That's 27 wins in the Premier League, it's the most in the history of this football club in 130 years. That's not progress, that's history and that's very, very difficult to do, especially in the league that we are playing in now.

"So big compliments to all the players and the staff for what they've done."

Arsenal's victory over United also ensures their title charge will go down to the wire when they host Everton on the final day of the season. If they go on to be crowned champions, it will see them lift Premier League silverware for the first time in 20 years.

Speaking to club media on what a league title would mean for the squad, Arteta added: "This result opens another box, another window, which is the last day of the season. Fighting for the Premier League in front of our people, with our families who are there. And we're going to live an amazing day together.

"It will go down to history and a big credit to those players and the staff for what we are doing. To achieve that with the long history that we have, that's down a lot to the quality, but as well to the determination and the mentality of this team and how much they want to win and how much they are willing to put in there to get results."

Arsenal's final game of the campaign comes against Everton on Sunday. They will know what they require to finish in first place after title rivals Manchester City travel to Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday.
