Mikel Merino has completed a medical with Arsenal ahead of his €33.5m transfer from Spanish side Real Sociedad, reports have claimed.

The Euro 2024 winner has been a long-term target for the Gunners throughout the summer window but a deal was only recently struck with Sociedad, who were keen not to lose the influential central midfielder.

However, the breakthrough eventually came and the transfer is nearing completion with Fabrizio Romano reporting a medical has been completed and the two clubs are exchanging relevant documents.

Merino made seven appearances during Spain's victorious Euro 2024 campaign, scoring an extra-time winner in the quarter-finals against Germany. He played in 32 La Liga games last season, contributing five goals and three assists as Sociedad finished sixth.

La Real had been successful in persuading Martin Zubimendi to reject Premier League interest from Liverpool, but they have not been able to convince Merino against having another crack in England after his previous stint with Newcastle United.

The news comes as a major boost for Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who had previously admitted his squad could do with reinforcing before the window closes, particularly in attacking areas.

Speaking after Saturday's win over Aston Villa, the Spaniard said: "We are really happy with the squad. It's true we had an injury with Gabriel Jesus and we missed him. We are a little bit short and if we can do something then we will do it."

Merino will sign a contract until 2028 with the north London side, who will have the option to extend those terms by another year. The 28-year-old will join David Raya and Riccardo Calafiori as permanent additions to Arteta's squad so far this summer, while youngsters Lucas Nygaard and Tommy Setford have been snapped up for the academy.

Arsenal's midfield was impressive on Saturday night during an assertive 2-0 win at Villa Park, with Thomas Partey striking after substitute Leandro Trossard had given them the lead.
